Summary:
- Norfolk Naval Shipyard's Apprentice program is a four-year Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) which is designed to attract students to the federal public service.
- Students are taken through a vigorous training program, to become skilled journeymen, combining
- academics,
- trade theory and
- on-the-job experience.
- The apprentice program provides students with academic training required for their trade.
- The training will result in a Certificate of Completion.
- All academics for the certificate program will be given during working hours the first year of the program.
- In the last three years of the program students will be given on-the-job learning and trade theory courses.
- Participants take college level courses taught by Tidewater Community College (TCC) at a TCC Campus.
- Students will be required to provide their own transportation while taking classes at the TCC Campus.
- Compressed sessions will consist of 2 ten week sessions.
- The apprentice earns a competitive wage while advancing to the journeymen level following a planned progressive training program.
- All academic tuition and books costs are paid by the Shipyard provided the student receives a grade of "C" or better in the course work pursued.
- Apprentices are employed at the pay rate of WG-1 and receive promotions upon successful completion of program requirements.
- Upon graduation, apprentices converted to the journeyman level of their trade, which in most cases will be WG-10.
NNSY Apprentice Program Eligibility Requirements
- United States citizenship
- High school graduate or GED equivalent
- Meet security and medical requirements
- Sign apprentice agreement that specifies academic and trade course requirements to complete program
- Able to attend classes during working hours and provide own transportation to TCC campus
- Current enrollment at TCC or apply for admission
- The COMPASS test is designed to evaluate reading, writing and math skills. Placement test may only be taken once per semester (4 months) so advance preparation is recommended. Placement Testing Sample Questions booklet is available at any TCC campus or online.
- TCC placement test results must be dated between October 17, 2010 and December 16, 2011 to qualify. Test scores or prior academic coursework completed before or after these dates will not be considered.
- Eligible test results must recommend placement for Math 3 (Algebra I), English 3 (Writing Improvement II), and English 5 (Reading Improvement II) or higher to be eligible for an interview.

- Locate announcement using "Search for Jobs" feature by typing "apprentice" in the "what" block and "Portsmouth, VA" in the "where" click on the Search button to locate.
- After locating announcement, click on announcement number and read "How to Apply" paragraph. You must login to https://applicationmanager.gov to build your account. You will need the Vacancy Identification Number (VIN) 532110.
- Your resume must be submitted electronically by downloading to the job announcement by closing date.
- Confirmation to acknowledge receipt of your application will be sent to the e-mail address you provided.
